The American Engineering Testing (AET) St. Paul, Duluth and Rochester facilities are accredited by the AASHTO Materials Reference Laboratory in the AASHTO Accreditation Program (AAP) in construction materials engineering and testing. These accreditations indicate our people and quality system have been assessed and found to be in compliance by a third party to the AASHTO R18 standard (Recommended Practice for Establishing and Implementing a Quality System for Construction Materials Laboratories). These accreditations document for our customers that our people have been evaluated for their technical competence and our quality system follows accepted practices. Our scope of accreditation includes the following standards:
- ASTM:E329 Standard Specification for Agencies Engaged in the Testing and/or Inspection of Materials Used in Construction
- ASTM:C1077 Standard Practice for Laboratories Testing Concrete and Concrete Aggregates for Use in Construction and Criteria for Laboratory Evaluation
- ASTM:D3666 Standard Specification for Minimum Requirements for Agencies Testing and Inspecting Road and Paving Materials
- ASTM:D3740 Standard Practice for Minimum Requirements for Agencies Engaged in the Testing and/or Inspection of Soils and Rock as Used in Engineering Design and Construction
AET’s Environmental Field Department in St. Paul is accredited in the Chemical field for stack emissions engineering and testing. This accreditation is through the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA) to the international quality assurance standard ANS/ISO/IEC 17025:2005E “General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories”).

Service quality at AET is achieved through an experienced staff and in-house quality assurance/quality control systems. We are audited by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and meet their requirements for test procedures, calibrations and accuracy. AET participates in proficiency sample programs including, but not limited to, the AASHTO Materials Reference Laboratory (the AMRL program) and the Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory program (CCRL).
AET conducts annual internal audits to assess the effectiveness of implementation of the quality assurance program. The quality assurance program was implemented company-wide on March 1, 1993.
Personnel
Personnel are certified by Mn/DOT, WisDOT, NICET, ACI, ICC, ASNT or other relevant certifying authorities, and are trained and competent in the procedures conducted.
Test and Inspection Procedures
Technical operating procedures follow industry-recognized standards such as ASTM and AASHTO and are maintained through an annual review process.
Equipment
Test and inspection equipment meets industry and procedural requirements and is maintained in current calibration with traceability to national metrology standards such as those maintained by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
Materials/Samples/Sample Handling
Test samples and other materials used in testing, such as consumables or reference materials, are identified in a manner suitable to trace the identification to the project. During receipt, sample preparation, testing, storage and shipping (if applicable), samples are handled with the care necessary to preserve their condition and integrity.
